Initial Solo Singing Rehearsal

https://youtu.be/7y5GYGlyAAw To start off the rehearsal, the director set us off to choose a couple solos from a musical for us to choose and perform in the final show. I went through all my favourite musicals and chose two songs; On My Own from Les Misérables and The Winner Takes It All from Mamma Mia. I decided to go for On my own as I felt it was more of a challenge for me to learn. To start off I performed a warm up. I have a singing teacher so I performed warm ups that are specifically tailored to help my voice best warm up. One of the warm ups were singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow, while going up the scale. Another was singing the melody of the song I'm about to sing, but singing it with my lips together and pushing air through them. These warm ups, along with others, are very important to perform as it ensures I don't damage my voice, along with allowing me to reach higher notes in songs. Initial Workshop with the Director

Exploring the space and understanding character: Within the workshop with the director we as a class worked on movement and choreographing the start of the routine and combining ideas we had discussed as a group. Throughout the lesson one key component the director reiterated was that timing was essential to ensure that the movement in the performance looked as effective as we envisioned. From watching the original performance of Hamilton we noticed as a call how slick and in time all of the movement was and this was due to the minimal set and the actors moving the set during the numbers. Things like this must be smooth and not distract the audience from the storyline. We decided to use chairs as our only set/props and explored different ways of moving around the space. In the video at 35 seconds you can see I kicked over and got off the chair a little quicker than everyone else, therefore making the effect of that move look less powerful.
